The One Minute Geographer: Massachusetts (6): How Big is Boston?

Massachusetts in one of those states where you think first of its big city: “The Hub” — Boston. So in that sense it’s like cities in several other states where the primate city dominates: New York, Chicago, Atlanta, Denver, Phoenix come to mind.

Boston is the 21st largest city in the US. Oops, sorry! I meant to say it’s the 11th largest. Correction! It’s the 6th largest! No, wait! Actually all those statements are true.

As we saw earlier, the legal City of Boston has 675,000 people — those who could vote for mayor — and it’s the nation’s 21st largest legal city. But Greater Boston, the Boston Metropolitan Statistical Area, is the nation’s 11th largest metropolitan area. It spreads over five Massachusetts counties, where 90% of the metro’s in-state population lives, but it also includes 10% of its population in two counties of southern New Hampshire.
