Whiteness Does Not See Itself: White Individuation vs. Universal Black Accountability
<p>Whiteness is privileged to not have to spend a moment reflecting on itself. Whiteness doesn’t “see” whiteness.</p>
<p>For white Americans, when one of “our own” commits racialized terrorism, we rarely think, “Oh no, look at what we white people are doing.” “We” don’t think like that. We are privileged to have an individualized response. All white people are not accountable for one white person.</p>
<p>Historically, any Black person’s brutalization could be an exemplar in the minority rule on plantations. Fugitive slave patrols may “get the wrong person” but it would still work to intimidate and control the many. After so-called “abolition of slavery” public lynching parties in a festival atmosphere depended on this zeitgeist.</p>
