Three Lessons I Have Learned About Building Better Relationships

Recently, a close friend of mine had issues with his superior at work which almost led to a fall-out and a consequent decision to transfer out of that branch of the organisation to another. A couple of meetings later, he decided to stay at his current branch and to continue to work under this superior. This whole experience taught me a few lessons about better human relationships which I would like to share here.

#1: Agree that human beings are complex social creatures

“Do two journey together unless they have agreed?” ‭‭ — Amos‬ ‭3‬:‭3‬. New American Bible Revised Edition

I think it is a common mistake we make to simplify our expectations of the behaviour of the other person we are in any kind of relationship with. This is the first problem my friend and his superior had. Because the choices and decisions and responses of human beings to particular stimuli are determined by so many varied factors and influences all through a person’s lifetime, it is too simplistic to expect a certain defined response from every one you relate with. Such factors and influences include age, sex, ethnic background, family, cultural and religious values, interactions with other people with a similar set of complex influences and so on.
