<p>Schilling and Cannon shared one more thing in common. They were both prolific liars.</p> <p>Cannon, who embraced the downhome moniker &ldquo;Uncle Jimmie,&rdquo; began spinning tales at least as earlier as 1879. His first documented boast as an Alamo survivor may have occurred in the summer of 1885 when Cannon wrote a letter to U.S. Secretary of State James G. Blaine. Cannon reportedly told the secretary he could &ldquo;present proofs&rdquo; to establish this claim, prompting one Texas newspaper to declare, &ldquo;If it turns out to be a fact it will be a historical sensation as it has never been believed any male escaped that awful massacre of patriots on March 6, 1836.&rdquo;</p> <p><a href="https://medium.com/read-or-die-hq/remember-the-alamo-frauds-8e7ace5419a6"><strong>Website</strong></a></p>
