Barcelonan Afrobrunch

In the previous blog post of Kimarie’s Kronicles, I discussed the significance of embracing my African American heritage and deeply exploring my identity here in Barcelona, Spain. Recently, I had the opportunity to connect with another black girl from New York who reached out to me on Instagram. The idea of having a black friend in a foreign country excited me, particularly because I had never traveled outside the United States before. The idea of coming to Barcelona on my own was daunting, largely due to the concerns of potential racism and discrimination.

That said, the girl who messaged me shared similar anxieties about studying independently as a black woman. She is currently learning abroad at the University of Barcelona, and her experience has exposed her to more of the black community here in the city. She recommended that I follow the Instagram page “afrobrunch_es,” which is an event planning company that promotes local black artists, musicians, jewelers, and restaurants.
