Itis pretty hard to access the life-saving, and quite frankly miracle drug that is naloxone; a familiar brand name being Narcan. Due to so, a recent move from the federal government has now made Narcan available over-the-counter. This is great, but it’s not enough.
Now that Narcan, the opioid antagonist and overdose reversal drug, is available over-the-counter, many deaths will not occur. Lives will be saved. However (a “however” politically seems to be all too common these days), this only addresses the literal, physical inaccessibility of Narcan. What keeps Narcan still inaccessible to most is the financial barrier. The average cost of over-the-counter Narcan is nearly $50 a box. Each box contains a one-usage, administering device.
