I love a good character backstory — something that sets up a reason for the character’s actions and responses to conflict. Especially if it’s about superheroes. So, when I was doing research for an article to write about Indigenous Peoples of Canada, I was intrigued to find out that a superhero from the DC universe has roots here in Canada.
Equinox is known as Miiyahbin “Mii” Marten, a sixteen-year-old First Nations superhero. She appeared in a five-issue story in the Justice League Canada comic book series as a member of Justice League United. She’s an Indigenous Peoples of Canada Cree from Moose Factory Island in Ontario, Canada, and has elemental powers. Equinox was created by Jeff Lemire and Mike McKone and first appeared in Justice League United in 2014.
