Pivoting to the Iranian protests, we are seeing similar collective action, this time by protestors over the abuses of the Iranian theocracy. Starting with the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old woman arrested by morality police in Tehran, the protests have swelled into an indictment of the government’s hypocrisy and oppression.
There is disagreement about whether these protests constitute a revolution or if they are more focused on demanding reforms. Evidence suggests that these are merely the latest in a series of protests starting in 2017 that constitute a true revolution, unlike the 2009 protests which focused more on reform.
