How data visualisation can distort our perception of reality

What you see is all there is. Whether you’re looking at a cover of a book, observing a couple arguing in the street, or watching a TV news report, we’re constantly making judgements based on the limited information we have access to.

We’re all entitled to perceive the world in our own way; however, our brains are hardwired to make quick assessments which can sometimes lead to making incorrect and irrational assumptions.

During the 2020 US election, there has been much controversy over the data visualisation maps used for representing the results of the political event. The critical argument is that each map shows a bias towards either the Democrat or Republican parties.
