Why It’s Okay To Be Self-ish (By The Time You Turn Sixty)

The 14th of September 2023 marks my living on Earth for sixty years. And it’s time for me to do for myself what I’ve done for others for six decades.

What does the word “selfish” mean to you? Does it conjure up any of the following synonyms?

Self-centered

Stingy

Mean

Tight-fisted

Nasty

Exclusive

Self-serving

Opinionated

Self-caring (?)

My six decades of experience have taught me that a lot of us were brought up to not be selfish in all the above ways.

But looking at the word “selfish” as self-ish puts a new spin on it.

For example, I now need to be self-centered or self-ish in terms of looking after myself. And this means being kind to myself as well as toward others.

For decades I have tried to genuinely support and uplift others. I am a supporter of diversity, inclusivity and equal rights.
