Why I Don’t Believe In Universal Human Rights

There are some that have read that title and are now thinking; ‘what kind of bestial savage could possibly reject the notion that certain freedoms and protections are the birthright of every human the world over?’

And I agree that when described thusly, universal human rights are among the most eminently noble and truly moral notions that humanity has ever devised.

Yet, in reality, there are number of fundamental issues which lie at the very heart of this most noble of ideas.

Some of these are conceptual and raise questions about where these rights come from, who grants and upholds them and which rights specifically are universal?

Some of these issues relate to the practical application of the doctrine and the consequences it engenders, namely humanitarian interventions and just wars, the erosion of sovereignty and self-determination, as well as moral absolutism.

What Are Human Rights?

We hear about them all the time; how some countries have them and some countries lack them, we hear politicians pontificate about them, we are exposed to them at school, hear them forever mentioned on the news and hear a great many people talk about them in a great many serious conversations.
