Why Books Should Never Be Banned

I keep hearing about certain books being banned in libraries and schools, especially in the USA. It made me raise an eyebrow when I heard of popular fiction being removed from the shelves due to content such as witchcraft and LGBTQ material.

It would be fine if it were inappropriate material which was 18+ but many of these books are regular works of fiction, read widely around the world.

Are Books Ever Bad?

Well there are some books that are strongly political and one-sided but generally stories are full of imagination and help to open our minds.

Harry Potter, for example, is written for young people and often read by older generations too, It has created plenty of awe and wonder for many people and inspired magnificent movies, theme parks and theatre productions.

LGBTQ books such as ‘Heartstopper’ and ‘Love, Simon’ have enabled teenagers to read about people their own age coming to terms with their sexuality. There us nothing wrong with that.

Books that are well written and explore subjects that reflect modern society should be valued and encouraged. Not banned.

It must feel to lots of readers that freedom of speech is being stifled when governing bodies and local councils are stepping in and dictating which books cannot be readily available.
