You’re Probably Not Actually White-Passing

<p>The practice of passing as white or non-Black emerged with Antebellum &amp; Jim Crow, something done intentionally &amp; strategically, as a means of survival. To escape slavery, violence, poverty, one could cast the illusion of whiteness. My sister &amp; I grew up half-Black in what you could call a sundown town, meaning it wasn&rsquo;t safe for Black people to be present there after dark, in the aftermath of violent segregationist practices. Our segregationist policies, demanding social separatism from Black people to secure your tribal membership, served as catalyst for, essentially, a race war between our Native folks &amp; the Black people they&rsquo;d once shared community with peacefully. This blight on our tribal history divided families, including ours, and continues to furnish the ongoing inter &amp; intra-community struggles between Black &amp; Native identities in our hometown.</p> <p><a href="https://medium.com/@kihnindewa/youre-probably-not-actually-white-passing-69ba3ec32dfa"><strong>Click Here</strong></a></p>
