The Fear of a Black Planet: Why White Nationalists Are Opposed to Immigration
<p>This issue of white fear is as prevalent today as it was 100 years ago (The Nadir of Race Relations, D.W. Griffith’s <em>Birth of A Nation</em> (1915) and the Yellow Peril), via the proliferation of cultural wars and the strident and consistent cacophony against what many fear is an ‘invasion’ that can lead to a second Civil War. I argue that the grating resistance to immigration at the southern border is due to the rising tide of color in America. This resistance is emblematic of the numerous reactionary efforts of white Americans to safeguard their perceived threatened social status. It has emerged from their perception of a gap between their expected and actual social status and power, causing them to resent current social arrangements.</p>
