What’s the good of games?

What is the value of games in our lives? This question was prompted by a query from my Mentor in Coaching and Positive Psychology, Dr Robert Biswas Diener, who inquired about games involving psychology and coaching. He encouraged me to think about how games can be used in coaching and facilitation. My initial approach was not to delve into the realm of professional facilitation or serious games but rather to explore the world of board gaming .

WhyBecause the primary focus of the gaming industry is fun! Their top priority is creating attractive, engaging, and enjoyable games above all else. Even when games are designed to achieve personal, group, or social objectives, they should always be fun .

If engagement and the creation of memorable experiences are not the primary focus, it might be wiser to choose a different tool for effecting the change you seek. This series of blogs aims to explore games as a source of personal and social good, beginning with a look at games that have had a significant positive impact on me and expanding to hypothesize about the broader benefits they can offer.

Games are fun first!

For Sale game

Games are fundamentally about having fun. They bring people together to share experiences filled with positive emotions like exhilaration, excitement, and anticipation . My own family cherished board games, and our father even designed games for us to play together. However, as we grew into adults, we drifted away from playing these games until my brothers Marcus & Aaron and I reunited for a rare in-person gathering. I brought a game, “For Sale,” which I suspected would be a hit.
