Whose Voice is Loudest in the Free World?

There’s an episode of the food travel show, “Somebody Feed Phil,” that features Marrakesh, Morocco. Phil and his companions are eating outdoors, and suddenly from a series of minarets all around the restaurant the adhan, the call for Muslim prayer rings out for the whole country to hear, as it does five times every day throughout the Muslim world.

In this case, the call interrupts the taping of the show and their meal, but the host treats the event as a wonderful, haunting novelty. Phil marvels at the adhan, saying, “When there’s so many it starts to define the place. There’s a feeling that we’re all together.”

One of his companions says, “It’s very special. You don’t need to understand the words. It’s just special.”
