My First Month in Venture Capital

Sometime around 400 years BCE in Greece, Plato was writing about the world of ideas, or forms. In his view, ideas are only perceptible and accessible to us through reason — a place in our minds where “perfect” forms exist. We know well that in this place, we create visions of the future we like to see ourselves living in and at some point we decide to give life to these visions through the work we do and the things we create. To this day, the world of ideas gives birth to remarkable creations across diverse fields, with technological innovations standing out as examples for this piece.

As someone that has always been fascinated by the combination of ideas with the sense of self-agency that is inherent to humans, the startup ecosystem in the Netherlands always seemed like the place to be for me. In having a mind that is bursting with ideas myself and in working with numerous startup founders through time as well as cultivating friendships with creative individuals, it has become easy for me to acknowledge the world of ideas in my own mind and that of others. Through these lenses, my eyes see every place I go to and every thing in the possession of people as an accumulation of ideas brought to life by people who dared to build what they were seeing in their minds. Granted, a lot of ideas over time have been highly self-centered and have in turn caused havoc — in fact many of these ideas are what the current startup ecosystem is trying to change by deploying a more holistic approach while building their solutions.
