Valuing A Private Life — Goodbye Instagram

In approximately 2011, after much persuasion, my mother finally allowed me to unleash my youthful creativity on the then-trending app, Instagram. While I never revealed my face, my feed, in the pre-”feed” era, overflowed with quirky, awkward photos of my ceramic art from my art class, various mustache memes (am I alone in recalling that craze?), miscellaneous obsessions, and haphazard collages of what I deemed fashionable. As you visualize this, picture it through the lens of the classic “early-bird” or “pop-rocket” filter, replete with black borders and an extra dose of vignette.

As I grew a bit older, I could finally reveal myself to the internet. I shared memories of my 8th-grade year, more eccentric obsessions, and the creative brainwaves my friends and I had. It was exhilarating, opening the door for creativity to flow in a new light.

Yet, over the years, the landscape of media production and consumption has shifted dramatically. More often than not, I find myself taking breaks from social media to regain focus and peace of mind. Instagram and social media, in general, are simply not what they used to be. While there are undoubtedly positive aspects to our evolving media interactions, there are also negative aspects.
