Some doctors will immediately order an MRI, show you the supposed cause (most of us have some level of degeneration), and recommend surgery. The doctors who follow treatment guidelines published by the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.aafp.org/family-physician/patient-care/clinical-recommendations/all-clinical-recommendations/back-pain.html" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank">American College of Physicians</a>&nbsp;or the<a href="https://www.healthquality.va.gov/guidelines/pain/lbp/" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank">&nbsp;VA/DoD</a>&nbsp;will recommend a gradual resumption of physical activity and potentially prescribe physical therapy.</p> <p>The costs and impact on your life differ dramatically.</p> <p>Why does this happen and how do we stop it?</p> <p>As a physical therapist and US citizen, I have first-hand experience of the brokenness of the healthcare system, having witnessed issues as a provider and consumer.
