A visit cut short by an unfortunate fall.

“I am here, please don’t tell your mom, it’s a surprise”, this is the conversation I had yesterday early evening with my friend’s daughter. It was her birthday, she was in the city with her daughter and I wanted to surprise her with flowers and a visit. She asked me to wait by her apartment or join them where her young kids were playing, and then we could all go eat together. Since I had found a good parking spot and knowing the parking situation in the city I was hesitant to drive and lose a good spot. I told her I’ll Uber and meet them at the food court, she responded, “ Mom wants to pick up food and eat at home, then we can all relax and have a good time”. I agreed, it was going to be 15 or 20 minutes, I decided to go for a walk, it was a beautiful neighborhood and she was close to the water. It was a perfect evening for a walk that energized me and grew my excitement of shortly surprising my friend.

I realized after a while, it seemed much longer and I started getting a little anxious, neither had I gotten a text or a call from her to let me know they were close so I could be out of sight, 45 minutes later I decided to call, she didn’t pick up, then in panic I texted her. When she texted back, reading her message, it was surreal, like a movie. This was supposed to be a perfect evening, and it had gone wrong. She wrote, and I could feel the distress in her text: “Mom fell and is on the ground unable to get up. We have called an ambulance, I’ll keep you posted.” I wanted to run and be with them but I froze, it didn’t seem real and I couldn’t move for some time.

Website
