Exploring the Surrounding Areas of Lisbon: A Trip to Barreiro

The old Barreiro train station operated from 1884 to 2008 as an interface between various railway services south of the Tagus River and river transport to Lisbon. It was Barreiro’s second train station, replacing another one opened in 1861 but was too far from the Mexilhoeiro pier where ships docked, making it challenging to transport personnel and goods. However, on December 14, 2008, this train station was also closed when the new Barreiro station opened, which could better meet people’s needs. The two stations are adjacent, and the main building of the old station is still used as a collection and storage area for local employees.
