A tribute to Hindi

Last week on the 14th of September we celebrated Hindi Diwas in India. The day marks the anniversary of the Munshi-Ayyangar formula, a compromise reached between two political camps divided on the status of language in the Indian constitution. One from the Hindi belt voiced for Hindi to be the official language, and the other from South India supported English. The compromise enabled Hindi to be used as the official language while placed English as an associate official language. The formula worked for 15 years after which English was announced as a de facto official language.

The nation is still riddled with this debate. Recent years have seen a rise of voices in support of Hindi to be selected as an official language. And so has the opposition of those voices.
