How I Talked to Our 9-year-old about Trans People
<p>Our son sat on the couch, watching Mr. Beast on his iPad. He laughed, showed the screen to my wife, and said, “Look how long Kris’s hair is!”</p>
<p>She said non-commitally, “Oh, yeah.” He returned his eyes to the screen, and she gave me a meaningful look.</p>
<p>We didn’t say anything else about it, because our son didn’t say anything else about it. We let him lead the conversation, or lack thereof. A surprised reaction to hair length didn’t necessarily signify anything deeper.</p>
<p>And to be honest, we hoped to put off the conversation about trans identities as long as possible. A celebrity YouTuber’s trans journey is a lot for a 9-year-old to process.</p>
