The Tragic History of the Tatars, the Indigenous People of Crimea

Volodymyr Zelensky and many other Ukrainian leaders have said that “the Russo-Ukraine War began with Crimea and must end with Crimea.” I can understand the Ukrainian government’s position. When I visited Crimea in 1996, I saw the beautiful land and temperate climate as an appealing vacation destination and the fortifications around Sevastopol, making it a critical military asset for the Russian Federation. That same year, I made a friend who is a mix of Crimean Tatar and Uzbek. She has given me an appreciation for the indigenous people of Crimea.
