The Tragic History of the Tatars, the Indigenous People of Crimea

<p>Volodymyr Zelensky and many other Ukrainian leaders have said that &ldquo;the Russo-Ukraine War began with Crimea and must end with Crimea.&rdquo; I can understand the Ukrainian government&rsquo;s position.</p> <p>When I visited Crimea in 1996, I saw the beautiful land and temperate climate as an appealing vacation destination and the fortifications around Sevastopol, making it a critical military asset for the Russian Federation.</p> <p>That same year, I made a friend who is a mix of Crimean Tatar and Uzbek. She has given me an appreciation for the indigenous people of Crimea.
