The Tragic History of the Tatars, the Indigenous People of Crimea
<p>Volodymyr Zelensky and many other Ukrainian leaders have said that “the Russo-Ukraine War began with Crimea and must end with Crimea.” I can understand the Ukrainian government’s position.</p>
<p>When I visited Crimea in 1996, I saw the beautiful land and temperate climate as an appealing vacation destination and the fortifications around Sevastopol, making it a critical military asset for the Russian Federation.</p>
<p>That same year, I made a friend who is a mix of Crimean Tatar and Uzbek. She has given me an appreciation for the indigenous people of Crimea. She is one of my best friends and mourns the occupation of her homeland.</p>
