Running Towards Death

I just returned from my first ten-day silent meditation retreat, at Southern California Vipassana Center. The site is located in Twentynine Palms, an hour north of Palm Springs, just past Joshua Tree. It’s safe to say that it was the strangest experience of my life. Many of you asked me to tell you how it went, so I figured it best to put my thoughts in writing while they’re fresh.

First off, “silent” means what you think it means. You aren’t allowed to talk until the morning of the last day. Any form of communication with fellow meditators is prohibited. No gestures, written notes, sign language, etc.

This makes for some practical difficulties. Many of the students share a room, but I lucked out and got my own. I did have to share a bathroom though, located between my room and my poopmate’s. We couldn’t knock, so we signalled our occupancy using the connected light switches in each of our rooms. When both switches are off, they glow red to show the bathroom is available. Clever.
