The Tones of Friendship

<p>Growing up, you&rsquo;d say it&rsquo;s not easy to make friends. As you get older, say past 40, it&rsquo;s not easy to keep friends. That&rsquo;s not me having a mood. It&rsquo;s the gospel truth.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s been said, &ldquo;You are the friends you keep.&rdquo; I won&rsquo;t dispute that although it does make you think about what friendship is all about. What&rsquo;s the value a person brings? But the following words I came across send shivers down my spine because you can&rsquo;t avoid the truth:</p> <p><strong>Show me who your friends are, and I&rsquo;ll tell you who you are.<br /> Tell me your company, and I&rsquo;ll tell you who you are.<br /> By the company you keep I can tell what life you lead.</strong></p> <p>At 47, I don&rsquo;t have many friends, but I can confidently say your earliest friends are the ones that shape you as an adult. And that&rsquo;s all there really is for you to know if you want quality people around you.</p> <p>Myearliest best friends were Hiroko Ann Tabuchi, Carmen Del Gado and Nora Hashim. Hiroko was from Japan, Carmen from El Salvador, and Nora from Malaysia. We were nine growing up in Woolwich, England. We were tight as thieves and none of us were into boyfriends like the other girls our age.</p> <p>The four of us were into music, running and role-playing.
