Tokyo’s Loneliest Beer Vending Machine?
<p>When I first arrived in Japan back in 1996, herds of alcohol (and pornography) vending machines still roamed the streets of cities, towns, and villages alike. 20+ years later, vending machines, 自動販売機, jidō hanbaiki or simply “vendos,” loaded with hot drinks in winter and cold in summer, along with specialized machines serving everything from snacks to hot noodles, umbrellas to paperback novels, are still standard features from the busiest train station platforms to the remotest car parks and lonely sidewalks. Still, the number of machines that sell beer (and pornography), like their near cousin the newspaper box, seems to be on the decline.</p>
