The Pit Inn, Tokyo

Considering the significance of the Pit Inn in Tokyo’s jazz scene over the last 60 years, the venue has a delightfully humble appearance. Walking from the nearby Shinjuku station, you could almost miss it if you weren’t careful.

A small neon orange sign reading “B1F JAZZ CLUB PIT INN” greets you as you enter the building. After heading down some stairs to the basement, you enter a small waiting room where the audience patiently waits to be seated.

The unassuming gray concrete walls are neatly littered with brightly colored posters advertising for upcoming events and performing artists. The audience members pack into the small room as they wait to be seated, remaining politely hushed as they are called into the venue one by one.
