How the Job Hopping Generation is Shaking Up the Workplace

Pay for Talent. Pray for Retention

The “traditional” path to long term career success looks different depending on who you ask. Some would say staying at a company for a minimum of a few years is a more sure-fire way to climb the corporate ladder, but many workers now deny that creed, boasting major salary in-creases and improved quality of life from swiftly switching roles and companies over short periods of time.

While most of us are well aware of the Great Resignation, which led to a steep hiring crisis, even after this, job hopping appears to have continued to swell. In a LinkedIn study from February of 2022, 25 percent of Gen Z’rs and 23 percent of millennials said they left or planned to leave their current employers within the next six months.

So, what gives?

John Frigo, eCommerce Manager for Bestpricenutrition.com says there’s been a massive generation shift.

“In the past employers and employees had kind of an understanding: I’ll be loyal to you if you’re loyal to me. I’ll work hard for you if you reward me and take care of me. At some point that was broken, there’s no loyalty, most employees’ wages don’t keep up with inflation even prior to the current hyperinflation, and that relationship has been broken,” he says.

Now, recent studies and surveys actually show that those who change jobs somewhat frequently were viewed more favorably. I.e. seen as keeping up with their industry, being able to adapt to change, etc., whereas people who stay somewhere for a long time can be viewed as stale or complacent, Frigo says.
