The Wisdom of a Life-long Education — A Journey of An Astronaut

The first lesson of the book comes in the very beginning when Chris Hadfield mentions how he decided to be an astronaut. It’s during the moon missions. With the first steps of Neil Armstrong on the Moon, Hadfield knew what he want to become.

“…It wasn’t destined for me to being an astronaut, I had to make myself an astronaut.” Being prepared through your life, just in case that moment you’re waiting for comes. That’s what discipline is. Nowadays, people don’t realize what it takes to be successful. Most people miss the process while focusing on the end. But success comes when you focus and enjoy the process. The road matters, not the end. The obstacle is the way as Ryan Holiday says.

On Education

“I am in space, weightless, and getting here only took 8 minutes and 42 seconds. Give or take a few thousand days of training.” — Chris Hadfield

What should be the attitude towards education? The first thing that comes to my mind is a piece by physicist Richard Feynman. He asks whether we only learn the name of something or the whole meaning behind it. Do we just memorize things or grasp the meaning behind the terms?

Our attitude towards education determines our future. And according to Hadfield, that attitude should be this: “You cannot see education as a springboard to get you to a higher position. Your goal must be education itself. The secret is to try to enjoy it.” That’s the essence — to learn and enjoy it. Hence, you don’t have to choose between education and entertainment. Such a mindset is one of the basis of success, and it is necessary to maintain this mindset along the whole road.

Website
