The Perspective — Potter Payper’s Verse

‘‘I’d be rich if it ever paid a penny for my thoughts’’. For me, this verse maybe one of, if not my favourite rap verses I have ever heard. Potter Payper invokes and provokes the very thoughts I would be rich from. Every line is a sharp shard of reality cutting, audibly slashing through me, opening wounds and gashes that the mind had dressed in gauze. I have listened to this song countless times, but this verse, in particular, will always send me into a trance-like state, no matter what I am doing. I almost see life from a different ‘perspective’, a different view. The lens changes through my eyes; I do not flashback nor forward but remain still, stuck, simply pondering. The ‘perspective’ I am given through Potter Payper’s lyrics I cannot even fully relate. I cannot superimpose myself. Yet, so often in the verse, the lyrics provoke so much. The line, ‘My depression and progression steady stuck in a cycle,’ is a depiction to me of the cyclical nature of life we can get stuck in, neither moving forward nor backward, but round and round. You can become depressed in your progression but also progress within that deep state of low emotion. However, most of the time, the lines are so blurred we may not even know which is which, so we stay spinning round.

I always enjoyed art, but I never had a particular interest in drawing until a few months ago. To tell the honest truth, whether you believe it or not, it was when I first heard this song I decided to put pencil to paper. The line that inspired me, ‘I cry with my pen and bleed with my eyes.’ When I first heard it, all I could think is I want to draw that line. My interpretation of it, whatever the outcome maybe. Both the use of personification and metaphors show the strong connection between writer and word. A powerful connection. A connection that inspires.
