How we created the Toxic Test and matched people with “The Office” characters

Today, we would like to take you behind the scenes of our latest project implemented here at the Spans Agency. It is a test that helps people identify toxic communication in the workplace. It was created in collaboration with Alter, a platform that connects people with qualified psychotherapists. Get ready for a journey into the realms of design and psychology!

Ideas and Concepts

We wanted to create something fun and educational about communication that can poison our work lives, a challenge many of us can relate to. And so we thought, why not create the Toxic Test that would help people check how well they can distinguish between healthy and toxic communication at work? To ensure that this test is written by professionals and shows valid results we offered Alter, a psychological platform, to become a partner of this project.

Together with our colleagues at Alter we came to the idea of connecting the visuals of the test with the iconic TV series “The Office”. Everyone loves the American adaptation, and it is perfect for exploring the theme of toxic communication in the workplace.

We brainstormed and came up with three design concepts.

Concept 1: Minimalistic Illustrations

Our first idea was to build the test around GIFs from “The Office.” But we wanted to keep it light and positive, so we added illustrations made in a minimalistic style. After completing the test, users would see a text description of their results and a picture representing a generalized image of a person who tends to demonstrate such behavior.
