The Essential Games: Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy (2021)

If you’re desperate to play a modern mainstream video game that’s packed full of genuinely amazing writing, you’d be hard-pressed to do much better than 2021’s Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy.

Whether you’re a fan of these characters from the super popular movies or their long run of comic books, there’s something here for you. The storyline in this game is a true wonder, pairing tons of involved and thoughtful character dialog with an overarching story that surprises in every chapter. The writing here is great and impactful, with much more character depth and emotional exploration than video games are usually known for.

There’s also a surprising amount of writing here considering that this is a classically styled linear single player game. You’ll hear near-constant spot-on banter between the main characters throughout the whole adventure. It’s written and acted exactly as you’d hope for if you’re a fan, and also done well enough that it should bring in newcomers as well. The game’s writing stays solid throughout its entire sixteen-ish hour run time, and there are enough little twists and dialog choices within that you can easily double that if you’re the sort of person who likes to see everything and you play through it again. The character dialog is just as charming the second time, particularly if you’re a fan of this group of space weirdos.
