Ecstacy of Saint Teresa Analysis

Cornaro Chapel is the home to an infamous Bernini sculpture known as the Ecstacy of Saint Teresa. The piece was commissioned by Federico Cornaro and was a chapel within the more remarkable Church of Santa Maria Della Vittoria. The main artwork is the centralized sculpture of Saint Teresa in the prime moment of an angel piercing her with the love of God. The piece was controversial for its time because it hinted at sexual connotations mixed with its purpose to depict a purely holy and divine moment. The three walls, including the wall that depicts Saint Teresa, all create a fictitious depiction of a theatre. The adjacent walls to the right and left of the centralized sculpture are utilized to generate the effect of an audience watching the divine moment.
