‘Ted Lasso’ Zaps Me Back to My Time in Spain

Idon’t know a lot about fútbol — or, as we Americans call it, soccer.

And I’m stubborn when it comes to watching shows and movies I can’t relate to. The occasional action movie is okay, but I can never relate to muscle-bound helicopter-jumpers who always save the day — and with damn good hair.

So stepping foot onto the pitch, I initially didn’t want to watch the Apple TV+ comedy: Ted Lasso.

Ted Lasso, on the surface, is about a fish-out-of-water fútbol coach. But once the layers are pulled back, the series reveals that the titular character, played by Jason Sudeikis, is trying to escape his feelings via a lucrative coaching offer that’s nowhere near his coaching wheelhouse. Ted knows football, not fútbol — yet that doesn’t stop him from moving to England to coach a sport he doesn’t even know the rules to.
