Who's Listening When You Talk to Yourself?

I was on the golf course recently, and suddenly, it hit me. The clouds parted, revealing the brilliant truth —my inconsistency wasn't because of poor technique, lack of practice, or physical limitations.

Nope.

My inconsistency was because of the noise in my head — the chatter, the instructions — Remember to do this. Don't do X. Do what the pro said.

I realized I was in my own way. Big time. Way too much static and interference. My inner phone lines were all jammed up. I remembered what my meditation and mindfulness practices have taught me: There are two of me in me.

It's weird to say that. Two of me, in me. Yep. That's right.

There's the talkative mind, commonly described as a manifestation of the ego. It's the part of me that wants to score well and thinks it can influence me to improve, make corrections, and prove to myself and the world that I can be a good golfer.

Let’s put golf aside because none of this has anything to do with golf.

Suppose you're a writer. Tell me you haven't heard those voices saying things like, It's time to write another article. You better check your stats. Figure out how to use ChatGPT more. Look at so and so. They have more followers than you. Come on, get your shit together and write more!
