A Tale of Smart Cities

Two news items illustrate antipodal ways of conceiving the integration of artificial intelligence into the lives of citizens. The first is that Amsterdam and Helsinki have published online registers of all artificial intelligence services used by the city administration. Each of the two capitals has launched a public register where citizens and tourists can see which algorithms are used and where, so that everyone can understand how artificial intelligence influences public services and the decisions of the city government.

The mayor of Helsinki, Jan Vapaavuori, said: “Helsinki aims to be the city in the world that best capitalises on digitalisation. Digitalisation is strongly associated with the utilisation of artificial intelligence. With the help of artificial intelligence, we can give people in the city better services available anywhere and at any time. In the front rank with the City of Amsterdam, we are proud to tell everyone openly what we use AI for.”
