Day 5 of 15 Days of Stills: Where to Find Taipei in Taiwan
<p>Taipei is so often shrouded by politics of impending doom that its soul is often forgotten. It grows ever more difficult to ignore China’s geopolitical threats. Hong Kong’s protests and silences were heard by the world, so Taiwan should be no exception. One would expect an anxiety-ridden country frozen in its tracks, preparing for war. But the heart of the city is not riddled with anxiety to fight — instead, it lies within the excitement to eat.</p>
<p>Taiwanese parents ask not what you saw, but what you ate. Apologies are never vocalized by voice but by a silent bowl of fruit. Frugality never applies to what is on the plate but always to everything else. In my house, we celebrate birthdays with a gift and a decision for dinner. One’s health and fortune are always a result of their food; to eat well is the marking of a good life. If you are looking for Taipei’s heart, then look nowhere else other than your stomach.</p>
