Amsterdam, the city for all?

The world is largely built by and for men, which leads to a systematic neglect of the needs of women (half the population) in society (Criado Perez, 2019). Criado Perez shares the shocking fact that the structure of human society is predicated on the generally shared idea of men as being the ‘default’ human beings which is reflected in the design of public urban spaces.

Even in 2021, where diversity and inclusion seem to be more important topics than ever, an observant eye can still catch the sometimes subtle ways in which public space is gendered. Thus, we think that when looking at urban places, gender is, among others, an important category of social stratification to take into account. More specifically, it is especially interesting to take a closer look into the relationship between gender divisions and individuals’ urban experiences. How do women experience urban life differently from men?

Website
