System Catcher, A Novel

Magenta lies on the hood of her car in the cold Connecticut night tracing her favorite constellation, until she can’t.

She leans into her boyfriend, “Erwin, Sagittarius. It doesn’t look right.” She starts drawing with her fingers in the night sky. As she follows the stars she exclaims, “There! There is something big at the bottom of the arrow. Look straight from Ascella to Gamma. From left to right. Wait, I don’t see Gamma. Do you?”

Erwin, already feeling his first hit, looks to where Magenta is pointing. He doesn’t say anything. They both lay and stare at the night sky.
