Swimsuit Feminism

As the new year approaches, Dolly Parton’s cheerleader outfit at the NFL Thanksgiving halftime show has me reflecting on the progress of American women in achieving equality in this country and the meaning of feminism. At 77 years old, Dolly Parton is often described as the most successful country artist of all time and a multimillionaire. During the halftime show, she donned the Dallas cheerleaders’ sequin booty shorts and cropped bra top to perform some of her iconic songs before an audience of around 40 million. Her outfit caused just the stir probably intended — some letting their “a woman her age” ageism fly, and others celebrating how great she looked and her freedom to wear whatever she wants “at any age.” Dolly Parton has long understood her ability to create conversation with her risqué and flamboyant style. In the age of social media, this latest outfit seemed brilliantly crafted to generate attention and increase her audience. That is good business just before the release of her rock album. And her well-earned success as a writer and performer rightfully continues.
