The Superstitions

Just east of Phoenix, Arizona, is a dramatic range of golden spires rising from the valley floor amidst the saguaros, ocotillo, and creosote bush. These are the Superstition Mountains. I made a few short excursions into this area with my family during November 2023.

This mountain range can be seen from downtown Phoenix (at least on clear days). In theory, you wouldn’t need a map to get there. Just point the car and drive toward them. The town of Apache Junction hugs the western slopes, and at this point, the road divides into Highway 60, bearing southeast, and Highway 88, turning northeast. Both of these roads bracket the bulk of the range. Years ago, it was possible to drive a massive loop around the mountains, but a segment of Highway 88 was destroyed by flooding in 2019 and remains blocked as of writing.
