White People — Let’s Teach Our Children There Are Stereotypes About Us Too

The other day I was standing at Starbucks, waiting for my drink. The barista put two drinks up at once and I stepped forward at the same time as another customer, an older White man. We did the “maintain six feet distant dance.” I said, “It’s dangerous to get between a White lady and her pumpkin spice latte.” He gave me a confused look. A Black woman standing nearby waiting for her drink quietly chuckled under her mask.

Whenever possible I try to make a point of acknowledging the stereotypes and tropes associated with White people. When I order at an Indian restaurant and the server asks how spicy I want my food I always say “White lady mild.” It almost always results in a smirk from the server. Of course, it’s not racist to do this. As a matter of fact, I believe it is an important but small thing we can do to help deal with racist legacy of our nation.
