How to Knock Over the Empire State Building

You can knock over the Empire State Building with 29 dominos. Each domino knocks over about 1-and-a-half times its mass. The last domino is as tall as the Empire State Building.

Now here’s the real question: How big does the first domino have to be?

About the size of a Tic Tac!

What does this mean for you?

Most people get clear on their B [see The Key to Extraordinary Leadership (and Coaching)]— their Empire State Building — and they get excited and try to knock over domino 10. And they push, and they push, and they can’t knock it over, and they say to themselves, “I was right all along. It’s not possible to have what I want. It’s not possible to create a form that matches my essence.” And they give up.

Instead, if you will start with the biggest smallest step you can take that you know you can do and not fail, you will soon create so much momentum that you’re knocking over domino 10 with ease.

The critical thing to understand is that it must be the BIGGEST smallest step you can take. It has to be big enough that it matters — it will move you closer to your goal — and small enough that success is assured. Knock over the next domino that you know you can knock over. If you’re not sure if you can do something, break it down into steps you know you can do.

It might be having a conversation with someone, going to a networking event, or taking an online course (like the one I offer, Coaching From Essence). It’s big enough — it has the potential to move you closer to your aim — but it’s also small enough (there’s no way to fail if you learn something). If you string enough small dominos together, suddenly you’re knocking over some meaningful stuff.
