Converting 3,300 Abu Dhabi Open Data Platform Datasets to the Open Data Product Specification Format

The Open Data Product Specification 2.1 was unveiled recently on 22nd August 2023. It features a JSON Schema along with a few sample data products. These samples were produced by transforming existing data products into ODPS format. Both the examples and the Schema have been made available on GitHub as part of the Open Data Product Initiative.

The Open Data Product Specification serves as an open-source, vendor-neutral metadata model for data products that can be machine-interpreted. It lays out the objects, attributes, and overall structure intrinsic to digital data products. This endeavor leans heavily on pre-existing standards (like schema.org), industry best practices, and burgeoning ideas such as Data Mesh. The guiding principle has been to recycle and adapt — embracing a “proudly borrowed” philosophy rather than attempting to reinvent the wheel.
