‘Southernization’ Is Killing U.S. Politics

Each time I vote in Alabama, I see two kinds of tables I never saw at polling places in my native New Jersey.

At the first, someone checks my required photo ID.

At the second, volunteers hand out free bottled water and snacks, such as Nutri-Grain bars, bags of Fritos, and Tootsie Pops for children. There may be two tables, one set up by Democrats and one by Republicans, with each standing the legally mandated 30 feet from the door of the voting room.

Party workers run these feeding stations, known as Voter Appreciation Tables. But those volunteers don’t pitch candidates or slip you campaign brochures. Any lobbying would be pointless given that many people stop by after they’ve voted. You don’t have to cast a ballot to get a free snack.

Website
