Dragons and Snakes eating Frogs: Mysteries of Medieval Hungarian Belts

The researchers explored the possibility that these belts were not produced in a central workshop but rather that they may have been produced by travelling craftsmen and in smaller, far-reaching workshops. In this way, the belt designs could be customised upon customer request, such as one of a snake or dragon eating a frog-like creature. The belt’s creation was an intricate one. First, the belt designs were created in soft materials like bee’s wax or wood to create a prototype. Based on this prototype, a casting mould was made, probably out of sand or ceramic mould. The molten bronze was poured into the cast and cooled, after which decorative carvings were added to the belt ends to give them unique designs. For more high-end belts, though this was not always the case, the belt was gilded in a thin layer of gold.
