Scientists Discovered That the Mexico City Is Sinking Rapidly

The most populated city in North America, Mexico City, has been sinking rapidly in the past decades. However, recent research suggests that it has sunken too low to reverse the damage. The underground aquifers have been being drained quickly over the years and the lake bed below the city has dried over the years. This has caused the cracking of the clay sheets in the city at an unavoidable pace.

Because of the rapid pace drying of the city’s land, the infrastructure of Mexico is at risk. Not just that, even the resultant water scarcity will affect millions of people within a few years. Scientists have also discovered that the northeast part of the city has been rapidly sinking in the past years at a high rate — as much as fifty centimetres a year. The researchers argued that, even if we try to raise the water levels in the region, the lost elevation of the land and the water storage capacity within the area is irreversible.
