I Too, Sing America

Ifind it easy to become disenchanted and discouraged by our prospects for the future here in America. We seem to be getting more polarized, angrier, less tolerant, more aggressive, less compassionate. I cringe at how we are viewed by the rest of the world. I am more often ashamed than proud. I’m angry that I’ve been made to feel this way.

I want to take back some of what has been stolen from us.

“I, too, sing America,” wrote Langston Hughes. “I am the darker brother. They send me to eat in the kitchen when company comes. But I laugh, and eat well, and grow strong. Tomorrow, I’ll be at the table when company comes. Nobody’ll dare say to me, ‘Eat in the kitchen’ then. Besides, they’ll see how beautiful I am, and be ashamed.”
