How Fluids Shaped History

Understanding how liquids work has always been essential to civilization. Early humans relied on an understanding of water in order to farm their crops and create irrigation systems. This study of fluids was purely practical, but it laid the groundwork for future theories. Understanding of water dynamics slowly improved and allowed the creation of sewage systems, aqueducts, and much more complex devices.

As humans slowly found more and more uses for water dynamics, mathematical methods were developing as well. During the Industrial Revolution, scientists were able to use techniques found in math to apply it their machines through the use of fluid dynamics. This greatly improved them and it is safe to say that without these advances our technology would be nowhere near where it is today. Modern computers can run advanced fluid simulations today that predict a wide variety of behaviors and allow us to work with many different fluids. Despite all of these advancements, many open questions remain in the field.
